One man is dead after St. Johns County a deputy fired on a man who was reportedly armed and threatening to hurt people in his home.
Deputies responded to the home on Katnack Road Wednesday afternoon when a woman called to say her father had several warrants out for his arrest and was threatening violence if they called police. The witness says they tried to talk the man in to turning himself in, but he refused.
WOKV has obtained the 911 calls from the family inside the home detailing the man’s violent escalation. In the calls you hear his daughter, who locked herself in a bedroom, tell the dispatcher she was terrified he would hear her.

At one point, the man, now identified as 64-year-old Rodney Wayne Stevens, barged in to the room and threw glass at the woman. She told dispatch he left and then came back and, at that point, tried to get in to the closet where they kept multiple guns. You could hear a struggle on the phone as she tried to keep him away from that area.
The call drops dead just seconds later, but the Sheriff’s Office tells us deputies entered the home and fatally shot Stevens.
At the time the 911 call dropped, Stevens’ daughter did not believe he was armed. She said he had been drinking and had “lost his mind”. He was staying with the daughter after splitting up with a longtime girlfriend, according to what she told 911.
The investigation in to this incident is ongoing. Stevens had three active warrants, including grand theft auto, felony battery and tampering with a witness.
No deputies were injured during this incident.
