JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has detained the suspect named in a hit-and-run that killed a 2-year-old girl at a Southside apartment complex on Sunday night.
JSO tells us 34-year-old Serdarus Scott was located at the Royal Estates Apartments on Arlington Expressway. Multiple tips from Jacksonville residents helped lead to his capture. He will be charged with leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in a fatality.
Police responded to the Harold House Apartments on Ring Lane around 5 p.m. Sunday night to find Janya Solomon badly injured. She was later pronounced dead from her injuries. We're told the driver had stopped to talk with someone in the apartment complex when Solomon walked in front of the car and was hit as it accelerate. JSO says the driver and passenger then switched places and drove off without stopping.
"He just hit her and left her in the road like trash. And all I want you to do is turn yourself in because my baby was innocent. My baby don't deserve this. You took my baby, she don't deserve this," a tearful Natalie Parker, the mother of Janya, told our partner Action News.
Parker says she thinks she knows who was behind the wheel of the SUV and what makes it worse, she says, is that she thinks the driver knew he hit her daughter and drove off anyway.
Christopher Bailey tells Action he got a phone call from one of his relatives inside the complex who told him what happened.
"I just got a phone call that a dude was arguing with somebody out here and then he reversed the car and ran the baby's head over...he had kids in the car and his baby mama gets out the car and drives for him. She drove him out the apartment."
The suspect vehicle was later found at the Leigh Meadows Apartments on Sunbeam Rd.
