MIDDLEBURG, Fl. - The Florida Highway Patrol found a vehicle believed to be involved in a hit-and-run crash on Hibiscus Avenue Sunday morning, and that may have led them to the person responsible for the crash.
According to FHP, it is processing for evidence a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck. Investigators said the vehicle has damage to the front right side near the headlight area.
The victim, 43-year-old Kevin Helm, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville in critical condition after being found with severe injuries lying in a roadside ditch.
The accident happened around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, but troopers were not called to the area until almost eight hours later.
According to FHP, the registered owner of the vehicle is being cooperative and helping investigators identify the driver in that crash. Troopers tell us they have concluded the owner of the truck was not driving at the time of the crash, but the owner may know who was. We’re told that person of interest was driving the truck with the permission of the owner. That person’s identity has not yet been released.
WOKV continues to speak with FHP about any updates in this investigation. We’re told they may be releasing more information later this afternoon.
