Friends and Family of Montrez Borroughs are still coming to grips with what happened.
"It really hasn't hit me yet, but it hits the family. But it's like it's not real," Borroughs' cousin, Denisha Coppock tells our partners CBS 47/Fox 30 Action News.
According to Savannah police, Borroughs, 11, was shot and killed by his 12-year-old nephew Friday night. They say the boys were playing with a gun, when it fired, hitting Borroughs in the chest. The victim’s family members do not believe any adults were present at the time.
His aunt, Shaleena Hamilton, said, "I think the parent and the child need to be charged. Because you have to take charge of your household and you have to be responsible for what goes on in your house.”
Borroughs recently moved to Jacksonville from Savannah. He was a student at Pinedale Elementary School on the Westside. He was visiting Savannah for the weekend.
The 12-year-old suspect faces a number of charges including, involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, and possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18. He is currently being held in a juvenile detention facility.
As of right now, the child is the only person charged in Borroughs' death.
