An assistant law professor at Florida Coastal says the state of Florida has a long road ahead toward legally recognizing same-sex marriages.
"I think on one hand legislators need to keep in mind that whatever they are going to be saying on the subject, the courts will be looking at it closely." says Tony Kolenc.
Kolence says this week's Supreme Court ruling doesn't affect Floridians today but says its something lawmakers should be thinking about in the future.
"On the other hand, the DOMA decision also stands for the proposition that states have a lot of freedom to define marriage."
Under current Florida law, same-sex marriage is not legally recognized. In November of 2008, same-sex marriage and civil unions were constitutionally banned by Florida voters.
