A Michigan man is taking on the FBI, claiming he tipped off the bureau to Osama bin Laden’s secret compound in Pakistan — and he wants his reward.
Sixty-three-year-old Tom Lee of Grand Rapids says he “accurately reported” to FBI Director James Comey that bin Laden was in Abbottabad, Pakistan in 2003. (Via The Grand Rapids Press)
Lee, is a U.S. citizen of Egyptian descent working as a gem merchant, according to several reports. He says he learned of bin Laden’s whereabouts from a Pakistani intelligence agent who claims to have personally taken him and his family there.
The former Al Qaeda leader was killed during a raid in that city in 2011 — eight years after Lee allegedly tipped off the FBI. Initially, the U.S. government offered a $25 million reward for any information leading directly to bin Laden’s capture or conviction — (Via WMAQ, WDAY)
— but later said no one would be getting it because the raid was the result of electronic intelligence. Lee has been unsuccessfully trying to contact the FBI ever since. (Via KLAS)
“I told them where the worst terrorist of the century was. What’s that worth?”
Lee claims to have provided the government with intelligence numerous times prior to his attempt in 2003. The FBI has not released a statement on the matter.
