Jacksonville, FL —

Family, friends, police officers, and well-wishers were all on hand Monday morning for Detective David White's funeral.

It was held at the First Baptist Church of Middleburg, and was be followed by a funeral procession from the church to the Russell Haven of Rest Funeral Home. The procession itself took about a half an hour from start to finish because of the volume of supporters and law enforcement on hand for the funeral. Traffic was backed up on Blanding Boulevard in front of the church for about an hour after the procession finished.

Speakers included Governor Rick Scott, pastor Alan Floyd, co-workers from the Clay County Sheriff's Office, and Detective White's cousin Craig Miller, who is a preacher.  Detective Matt Hanlin was also in attendance.  Hanlin was shot in the arm the night White was killed.

The route went north on Blanding from the church to a right on CR 220 at Middleburg High School to a right on CR 209 to a right on Sandridge Road.

Law enforcement officers from all over Florida and even some parts of Georgia made the drive to Middleburg to pay their respects. Officers from as far away as Columbia County, Georgia and Volusia County here in Florida were on hand. One listener told us on Facebook that she saw officers from U.S. Customs and police from the airport.

White was shot and killed February 16th by 36-year-old Ted Tilley while investigating a meth lab on Alligator Boulevard in Middleburg. Police shot and killed Tilley after he shot White and another deputy.

A handful of well-wishers and Middleburg residents gathered across the street from the church to pay their respects, many holding flowers, balloons, and American flags.

"The police force down here, they take their life into their hands every day trying to protect and help people, and people take them for granted so I just wanted to come out here and show my support," says supporter Corrine.

"It just shows you that there's a lot of love and a lot of respect going around for everybody. Our hearts and our prayers go out for them and we have endless respect for the family," says Daniel Wright, who also came to pay his respects.

Bruce Brooker says he used to see Detective White a lot at the store where he gets his morning coffee. He says he and White would always say hello to each other.

"Just in passing, you know, 'Good morning, sir. How are you doing? Have a nice day, be safe, appreciate what you're doing for the community.' Just stuff like that, you know, try to be friendly to all our police officers. We just don't realize what they go through every day. It's just such a tragedy."

Thousands turned out Sunday at the Russell Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Green Cove Springs for White's viewing.

"I've lived here in Clay County my entire life and I truly don't believe I've ever seen this kind of response," said Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler.

White's family was at the viewing Sunday night greeting visitors for hours.

"There are literally thousands of people. It's got to be exhausting for the family to stand there and speak to every person and shake every person's hand, and they're doing that," Beseler said.

Also in attendance was White's former partner, Sergeant Andy Scott, who says White was a great partner, and was someone who didn't have a mean bone in his body.

"It's always hard when you lose a friend and it's one of those things where you really can't say goodbye to him. It's just, all of a sudden, he's there and then he's gone."

An account has been set up to assist the White family in their time of need. Those wishing to donate can seek information regarding the Clay County Sheriff's Office Deputies Humanitarian Fund at Heritage Bank in Orange Park. The account number is 1520387212.
