Jacksonville, FL —

A 20-year-old faces a charge of aggravated child abuse for allegedly pushing a two-year-old down.

Jacksonville Police say Devonte Baker was watching the girl, whose name has not been released for privacy, when she sustained a life-threatening injury Friday.  A female caretaker, whose relationship to the child has not yet been released, returned to the home where Baker was to find the child unresponsive.  She was then brought to the hospital.

Baker initially claimed the child slipped in the shower. A doctor who treated her however told police “The degree of injury was not proportionate to the mechanism of injury.” Police then decided to interview Baker further.

He initially told police a number of stories which didn’t match the child’s injuries, before eventually admitting to pushing the girl down, from which she hit hurt head.  Baker told police he was frustrated because the girl would not stop crying after injuring her lip in the shower.

Rather than take her to get medical attention, Baker put the unresponsive child in her bed.  Police say Baker hoped she would just wake up.
