$4 million estimated in Clay County recovery

By Gene Wexler

CLAY COUNTY, FLA. —

Clay County Fire Chief Lorin Mock says the $4 million dollar damage estimate will continue to grow.

"It will be a costly operation," he said.

He says the Federal Emergency Management Agency is coming on Tuesday to further assess damage costs.  Governor Rick Scott has requested a presidential declaration of disaster emergency for the state of Florida, so Mock says he hopes Clay County will get some of those federal funds.

Mock says 579 homes were damaged because of flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.

"The real eye-opener is more than a hundred of those are listed as majorly impacted or destroyed from the flooding," he said.

It's not all grim news though.

"The community really steps up and cares for itself," Mock said.  Most of those who were flooded out of their homes "have been able to seek shelter with friends or family members."

Black Creek has been reopened but the main street boat ramp is closed because of debris.

He says they're working round-the-clock to fix the sink hole on County Road 218.  He hopes to have some good news about that sometime this week.
