9-year-old fighting for life after hit by car

By Gene Wexler

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

A nine-year-old boy is in the hospital tonight after sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The unknown boy was struck by a car around 6 p.m. while crossing Firestone Road just west of I-295 in Jacksonville's Westside.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the boy was crossing Firestone Road just north of Wheat Road when he was struck by a northbound car.  The car had stopped at a stop sign at Wheat and then continued northbound on Firestone.  Several southbound cars were stopped at the Wheat intersection and the boy passed between the cars.

The JSO says speed was not a factor in the crash.

The boy's parents were notified, and he was taken to Shands Jacksonville.
