JACKSONVILLE, FLA. —

In what appears to be miscommunication between the City of Jacksonville and the Jaguars, the city has rescinded its accusation that the city's NFL team violated its contract.

The Jaguars recently received a letter saying the team defaulted on its contract.   In his own letter to the city, owner Shad Khan said that the city may have been insinuating that the team was in danger of losing its lease at Everbank Field.  General Counsel Cindy Laquidara said the team defaulted when team president Mark Lamping notified the city by letter that it recommended using SMG to manage its facilities.

Khan's letter states, "Less than ninety days into my operation of the Jaguars, the City of Jacksonville issued a request for proposals for a facility manager that initiated a process in clear violation of our lease."

At 6:05 p.m., WOKV received two letters from Mayor Alvin Brown's Office.  One was from Cindy Laquidara saying, "I hereby withdraw any notice of default."

The other letter was from Mayor Brown stating, "Let me be crystal clear: the City of Jacksonville has absolutely no intention whatsoever of terminating its lease with the Jacksonville Jaguars."

As the exchange played out, Jaguars This Week was airing live on WOKV, prompting a lively discussion in which former Jaguar Tony Boselli called the city's actions "idiotic" and "uncalled for"

"It was...an unmitigated disaster...If you were in default, why wouldn't you call them [the Jaguars] and say 'Listen, guys.  We have a problem here.  Can we figure this out?"

The hosts agreed that, instead of sending a letter to the Jaguars with the local newspaper CCed, the city should have picked up the phone and called the Jaguars to work it out in private.

"There's a way to do business, and one of those ways that's not the way to go about it is to send a letter to a partner, which is the Jaguars, and then at the same time go ahead and send that letter to the newspaper," added Jaguars color commentator Jeff Lageman.

The letters sent between the city and the Jaguars are linked at the left of the page.
