Ted Hanner was sentenced to 18 days in prison on Tuesday on misdemeanor reckless boating charges. A February boating accident claimed the lives of Hanner's son, Tyler, and his son's friend, Halee Mickey.
"I'm relieved," Hanner told our news partner channel 4. "I just want to thank the judge for his decision and especially I want to thank everyone that's behind me."
Hanner, his son, and Halee were boating on Black Creek on President's Day when Hanner looked away from the wheel to tinker with the boat's motor. The boat crashed into a low-lying tree, instantly killing Tyler and Halee.
He was arrested in June on an unrelated DUI charge. Hanner admitted he had turned to alcohol to help him cope with the loss of his son and Halee, who he says was part of his family. He says working as hard as he can to forgive himself for what happened.
