Clay homeowners trapped because of sinkholes

By WOKV News Team

Middleburg, FL —

Hundreds of people in Clay County are trapped in their homes along County Road 218 between Mimosa and Nolan Road, just west of Blanding.

Anthony Boyle was one of those people.  He went to visit a friend on the Westside Tuesday night and when he returned, he found the road had been completely blocked and he wasn't allowed to return to his house.

"I mean I'd love to get home," said Boyle.  "I slept at my grandfather's house up the road last night because I can't get the final 2 blocks back to my house."

Clay County Fire Chief and Emergency Operations Manager Lorin Mock tells WOKV News both sinkholes are at least 40 feet and it'll take some time before crews can make a permanent fix.

"I mean, it's more than an inconvenience.  They literally can't get out of areas, and we have trouble getting access into it."

Dump trucks hauled sand in to help fill in some of the washed out roadway, but Mock estimated the road would need major reconstruction.

Mock says hundreds of homes in Clay County have been severely damaged by flooding but so far there are no reports of any injuries.
