Jacksonville, FL —

If you received notice about a hearing or court appearance before the courthouse shuffle began, you may not have all the information you need- and many of you are having trouble finding the answers.

“I was on the phone all morning calling the city of Jacksonville, also the County Clerk office and I couldn’t get answers,” says one man who I met outside the new Duval County Courthouse.

As he was walking up to the doors he was met by a security guard who told him to go to the old courthouse, despite the fact that his hearing notice says to appear at the new Adams Street location. He says it’s a good thing he took off time from work today to figure out exactly where to go tomorrow, but it’s inconvenient nonetheless.

“I just wanna get this hearing over and done with,” he says.

The Duval County Clerk of Courts office website has a schedule of when and where hearings have been moved, but you cannot get a lot of this information over the phone at this point because, in the move, many phones have been taken off the hook.

At the old courthouse people were, again, getting turned away. The courthouse is open in a very limited capacity this week and most questions are still being handled at the Courthouse Annex or Beach Boulevard office, and that’s exactly where security personnel are sending people who show up at the door.

Although today is the first day in three weeks the old courthouse has been open at all, security guards say they were dealing with questions from people approaching the building the whole time.

For now the halls in that building are empty. Most of the offices are dark and the few with people inside are locked from the public. The parts of the old courthouse that are open will be at least through the first half of the week as staff begins to settle in to the new courthouse.

Even though he was inconvenienced, the man who I met at the new courthouse is excited to see the new building open, because of the potential it has, and because he can finally get his legal questions settled.
