DCF investigating home where toddler thrown down stairs

By Stephanie Brown

St. Augustine, FL —

While the man deputies say threw his two-year-old daughter down a flight of concrete stairs waits in jail, the Florida Department of Children and Families continues its investigation.

“It’s an awful case and we’re working very closely with law enforcement to make sure they’re getting their investigation done,” says Florida DCF Communications Director Joe Follick.

While he can’t go in to many of the details of the current investigation, he says their main focus is determining whether the home is safe for the toddler.

“Drug use in the house is obviously one of the things we take in to consideration if a child is safe in that living condition,” Follick says.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Incident Report we obtained show a man told deputies he was smoking marijuana with 24-year-old Joseph Izzi at an apartment on 6000 Domenico Circle.  He says Izzi became out of control, grabbed the toddler and threw her out of the door and down a flight of stairs.

When deputies arrived, Izzi was running naked through the parking lot. He ran up a flight of stairs before diving through a balcony screen on to the ground.  He resisted officers trying to arrest him, kicking and trying to bite them.  Deputies say he injured himself as well while he was sitting in the back of the patrol car, he hit his head against the cage.

The girl was treated at Flagler Hospital and is now in the custody of relatives.

Izzi is charged with battery on an officer, aggravated child abuse and resisting an officer with violence.  At last check, he remained in St. Johns County Jail.
