We're learning more about the driver involved in a car vs. pedestrian accident Friday in Mandarin that left a 57-year-old woman dead and her teenage daughter in the hospital.
Records our partners at Action News got from JSO show 66-year-old Michael Fortunato has an extensive driving record with violations for things like speeding, running stop signs, driving without a license, driving with a suspended license, and even careless driving for a total of 15 violations dating back to 1996
The most recent? Running a red light back in April. He has a court appearance at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon on that violation. Florida Highway Patrol says his license was expired when he hit and killed Esther Ohayon on San Jose near Haley Rd. on Friday. Her 16-year-old daughter Orly was also hit as the two of them were on their way to Yom Kippur services at the Etz Chaim Synagogue.
Members of the Jewish faith do not drive or even use electronics, including crosswalk buttons, during Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days of the Jewish year.
Fortunato has not been charged in Friday's accident and it's unclear whether he will be. WOKV confirmed with FHP yesterday he'd hit and killed 6-year-old Kaitlyn Springer a few blocks from there just four years ago. Fortunato was never charged in Springer's death.
FHP says so far he's been cooperative with their investigation. They say they are waiting for the results of blood samples Fortunato volunteered at the accident scene.
