Duval school board demotes principal for testing misconduct

By Matt Augustine

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

Dozens rallied behind a now former principal of Windy Hill Elementary School at a school board meeting last night after she was demoted to assistant principal and had her salary reduced amidst allegations she did not conduct FCATs properly.

"It's just not a job for her, a 9 to 5 job.  It's not a 40 hour week.  It's a lifestyle for her, a vocation, a heart calling," said one supporter.

Those who vouched for Sharon Sanders say she was dedicated to the children in her school and is an integral part of that community. Sanders is accused of not following FCAT procedures like keeping students properly spaced and removing test materials from the room that could help students. Her lawyer says no cheating took place and no scores were sullied.

All the evidence shows that there was no cheating or improper testing scores that went on at the school so we're fairly perplexed as to why this vote took place," said Tad Delegal, Sanders' attorney.

The school board says it will complete a full investigation in accordance with state procedure. Sanders says she'll keep working for Duval County Public Schools  but is considering filing a lawsuit.
