Elections supervisor backing away from new office

By Matt Augustine

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

We're hearing from Duval's Supervisor of Elections about a new development in the battle to find a more comfortable and less expensive home for his office.

"With this competitive group all wanting to vie for us to lease a building it has really driven down the price," says Duval County Elections Supervisor Jerry Holland.

Holland now says it may be better to stay in his current office or move to one of two other locations than build a new building. Holland says Gateway has cut its offer almost in half from the $51,000 a month to a starting price of a little less than $25,000 that would increase to a high of just over $32,000 but he also has offers at One Imeson on the Northside and the Southgate Plaza where traffic court used to be.  One Imeson is offering a 10 year lease with no rent the first year and only a $3,333 maintenance charge.  After the first year it would be $24,750 and increase to a high of just over $30,000 including the maintenance fee .  Southgate would give the first four months rent free but then they'd be paying almost $29,000 a month plus a maintenance fee and the rent would increase to just over $36,000 at its highest.

Holland says at this point, it's really about doing what's best for the taxpayers.

"It really showed to our current landlord that the city is serious about possibly moving."

Holland says the next step is to draw up a boilerplate lease that would charge the landlords for any damages or maintenance and upkeep issues to make sure they don't run into problems like they've had at Gateway.  He says regardless of what they decide to do, there will be language in whatever lease the city signs allowing them to move to another city owned facility, whether that means moving to a building that's already there or building a new office altogether.
