FL House panel approves voting reforms

By Tiffany Griffith

Tallahassee, FL —

During the State of the Union address, there was some presidential spotlight on Florida's election flaws. And that might have pushed state lawmakers into a vote yesterday.

After highlighting a 102-year-old Miami woman's three hour wait to vote, there was an almost immediate response from Florida lawmakers.

"We need to listen to people's demands for what they want, and provide it to them, and safe guard that people that want to vote can vote and that every vote does count," said Secretary of State Ken Detzner.

First thing Wednesday, a House panel unanimously approved a bill to expand early voting on a county-by-county basis, and limit ballot questions to 75 words. Representatives say provisional or absentee ballots still need to be addressed.

President Obama has also started a bi-partisan commission to study the time it takes to vote.
