Florida crime rate lowest in history

By Andrew Greenstein

Jacksonville, FL —

Crime in Florida is now at its lowest level in history.

According to the latest Florida Uniform Crime Report, the statewide crime rate fell 6.7 percent last year -- that's 54,000 fewer crimes committed.

Two of the largest drops were motor vehicle theft, which fell 17.5 percent, and robberies, which are down 16 percent.

Keith Kameg with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement says there cooperation is the key to reducing the crime rate even further.

"Everybody needs to take part -- that's police, sheriff, state and local governments, citizens," says Kameg.  "Everybody worked together to get these numbers, but we still have a lot to do."

Locally, the report showed that Duval County has shed its long-held title as the murder capital of Florida.

For every 100,000 people, there were 8.98 murders in Duval County -- fewer than the 9.03 reported by Miami-Dade County.

Duval County had been the murder capital of Florida for over ten years.
