Florida GOP getting ready to schedule primary for Jan. 31

Jacksonville, FL —

Florida could be getting ready to throw the electoral calendar into chaos.

The state is getting ready to schedule its presidential primary for January 31st.

State Senator John Thrasher, who is on the nine-member committee that will set the date, says the idea is to ensure that Florida will be a major player in the early primaries.

He says states like Iowa and New Hampshire will always go first, but that Florida doesn't want to go too much later.

"We certainly do not want to go less than fifth," Thrasher tells WOKV news.

He says by setting the date by Friday, that will force the hands of other states.

"We know that if we set our date that South Carolina, New Hampshire (and) Iowa will always be able to go before us."

He goes on to say by setting the primary date early, that will get the candidates to flood the state over the next few months.
