Former Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford wins GOP Congressional primary

After a brief hiatus from local politics, former Jacksonville sheriff John Rutherford has one the Republican nomination to represent Florida’s 4th congressional district.

Rutherford quickly decided to run following Rep. Ander Crenshaw’s retirement announcement and was the clear front-runner all the way up to election night. He received 35 percent of the vote in St. Johns, 39% in Duval and 41% in Nassau County.

Rutherford will face David Bruderly in the general election but, given the demographics of the district, has essentially punched his ticket to Congress.

State Rep. Lake Ray, who has termed out of the Florida House, finished with 21 percent support in Duval and Nassau, good enough for second place. Hans Tanzler finished in second place in St. Johns with 20 percent of the vote.
