Furniture fight brews for new courthouse

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

The new downtown courthouse is only days away from completion -- now a huge fight is brewing over how to furnish it.

The courthouse has already cost taxpayers $350-million -- some $160-million more than originally budgeted.

Now, the question is -- should the city spend an additional $750-thousand for new furniture?

Mayor Brown says his staff looked at the furniture in the old courthouse and it would do fine on the seventh floor of the new one.

"We are prepared to move all of the (old) furniture into the (new) courthouse," says Ronnie Belton, city CFO.  "Savings are savings, so when I see some savings possibilities, that's what I'm doing."

Congresswoman Corrine Brown, however, sees it differently.

"The (old) furniture is sick," she says.  "Come on, you don't spend $350 million (on the new courthouse) and then you don't put in the proper furniture."

Brown says the old furniture is unhealthy.  "There's mold in that courthouse, and so you don't want to make people sick."

City Councilwoman Kimberly Daniels has introduced a bill that would appropriate $750-thousand for new furniture, and the City Council is slated to take up the issue at its meeting Tuesday night.
