Jacksonville, FL —
It's one of the most controversial things the Florida Legislature is considering, and we'll find out later today how likely some anti-abortion bills are to move through the Florida House. The Republican-controlled body is expected to pass a series of measures similar to two bills former Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed last year, and a proposed state constitutional amendment.
One of the veto replacement bills (HB 1127) would require women to view ultrasounds of their fetuses or hear descriptions about them before getting an abortion.
The other (HB 97) would exclude abortion coverage from policies obtained through insurance exchanges required under the federal health care overhaul.
The amendment (HJR 1179) would ban public funding of abortions and exempt abortion from the Florida Constitution's privacy right.
If passed, the measures go to the Senate. Floor votes also are expected there this week on the proposed amendment and insurance exchange bills. If passed, the ultrasound provision would get the signature of Gov. Rick Scott.
Orlando Democrat Representative Scott Randolph said these bills would kill jobs. “These are the type of bills that when companies are thinking about relocating they look at all sort of these type of bills and they say I’m not going to relocate to some type of place that doesn’t respect GBLT rights or doesn’t respect women’s rights or I have to do something special to health care to provide health care to my employees,” said Randolph.
