Inmate in central Florida uses computer glitch to get out of jail

Several prisoners in a Lake County, Florida jail cashed in on a computer glitch and one was even able to make enough money to post bond and walk out of jail scot free.

When inmates make a phone call, they have to input their inmate ID number.   If nobody answers their call, the money the prisoner used to make the call is refunded to his/her commissary account.  In this case, a glitch refunded double the cost of the call.  Some prisoners realized the increase in funds in their prisoner commissary account, and took advantage of it.

"One inmate actually built up his account to just over $1200, which is the amount of money he needed to bond out and he was actually able to do so," says Lt. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

A jailer realized the increase in call volume and notified police.  The glitch was caught within 24 hours and the computer systems were set back to the balances they had before the glitch.
