Jacksonville's unemployment falling

By Andrew Greenstein

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

As we await theĀ federal unemployment numbers for April, we're learning that we're doing quite well here in Jacksonville.

"Last month, we found that we were a percentage point and a half lower in unemployment than we were a year ago," says Candace Moody with WorkSource.

In fact, she says Jacksonville is in better shape than the state of Florida as a whole when it comes to unemployment.

She says a major reason is the region's diverse industry base.

"We're not relying on a single industry to the detriment of others. And that means our recovery is probably going to be a little more balanced and happen a little faster," she says.

She says one industry in particular is leading the way.

"We see health care really leading the way in employment, and it's an industry that's recovering faster than the other industries here locally."

She says other leading industries in putting people back to work include IT and transportation and logistics.
