Jacksonville, FL —
A sleep diagnostics company with Northeast Florida roots has settled a federal suit by paying a $15,301,341 bill.
American Sleep Medicine LLC, headquartered in Jacksonville, owns and operates 19 diagnostic sleep testing centers through the US. The United States claimed the company falsely billed Medicare and TRICARE, the healthcare program for Uniformed Service members and their families.
The company mainly provides testing for patients suffering sleep disorders like sleep apnea in order to help write a treatment plan.
Federal program requirements say claims can be reimbursed if initial sleep studies performed as part of sleep disorder testing are conducted by licensed or certified technicians. The US says the testing was performed by technicians without the full credentials needed.
The case alleged false claims by American Sleep between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2011.
The company will also agree to enhanced accountability and wide-ranging monitoring activities through internal and independent external reviews.
