The Jaguars newest player has made his debut to the city, and he’s leaving no question about his intention on the team.
“I’m excited about last night, but I know I’m here now- I’m ready to work,” says Luke Joeckel.
Joeckel was the Jags’ first choice, and he was taken as the second overall draft pick Thursday night. He says he has a chip on his shoulder because he wasn’t taken first, but that’s just more reason for him to prove himself on the field, something he can’t wait to do.
“I’m excited to get down here, excited to get with these offensive line guys and learn from them,” he says.
I asked Joeckel how he feels not just being the Jaguars top choice, but being the first choice of the team with a new direction- under new Coach Gus Bradley and GM David Caldwell. He says change is nothing new, coming from Texas A&M which joined the SEC just last season. In fact, he thinks the change only further adds to the excitement.
The passion he showed to the media today was well received by longtime Jags fans.
“You want players that are as dedicated to playing as you are as a fan watching them play,” says season ticket holder Mike Williams.
Williams has held season tickets since the team debuted, and tells me Joeckel was the perfect choice.
“I think this is the beginning of the beginning,” Williams says.
He’s got some ideas about what the Jags should do with the rest of their draft picks, but ultimately says he trusts the team will make the right calls, as they did here.
Bradley made it clear they will continue to focus on building a team that competes not just against other teams, but competes to prove itself in each position. The draft continues Friday night and Saturday.
