JSO investigating after two pedestrians died in weekend hit-and-runs

Traffic homicide investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office are starting off their week trying to find the vehicles and drivers involved in two separate fatal hit and runs over the weekend.

The latest happened around 8:45 Sunday morning when 29-year-old Ricky Donald Dailey was killed when a vehicle struck him while he was walking on the Matthews Bridge.

The other happened around 5 a.m. Saturday when Fransico Antunez died trying to cross Atlantic Boulevard near Acme Street. JSO hasn't released any other information on Antunez at this time, including his age.

A third man - 58-year-old Jose Antonio Irizarry - was also killed over the weekend after a vehicle hit him as he walked on Beach Boulevard near the intersection of DeSalvo Road.

All three victims are Jacksonville residents, according to JSO.

In Irizarry's case, the vehicle which hit him stayed at the scene and the driver is cooperating with the investigation, per JSO.

In the cases of Dailey and Antunez, JSO says the drivers fled the scene in the vehicles which were involved right after the accidents happened.

Investigators think Dailey was walking eastbound on the Matthews when a vehicle hit him from behind, knocking him over a railing and causing him to fall around 15 to 20 feet onto an embankment on Victoria Street.

JSO says Dailey died at the scene from his injuries and that they have an idea what kind of vehicle was involved as well as who may have been driving that vehicle at the time.

As for Antunez, officers think he was trying to cross Atlantic from south to north when a white-colored vehicle traveling westbound on Atlantic hit him and kept on going. He also died at the scene.

A witness called for help and attempted to follow the vehicle but lost sight of it as it approached University Boulevard, according to JSO.

Anyone with information in any of these cases is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500 or email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. Those who wish to remain anonymous and possibly qualify for a cash reward can call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS (8477).
