JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

Jacksonville police have arrested the man they believe is responsible for the hit-and-run death of a 22-year-old on August 10th after a concert at Maverick's at the Jacksonville Landing.

Gary Johnson, 26, was not the driver of the truck that ran over the head of Taylor Evans.

That night, fights broke out after people were leaving a concert at Maverick's Bar.

Police say during the altercation Johnson came between the victim, Evans, and the driver of a pickup truck.

Johnson "repeatedly started striking the driver, punching him, causing great bodily harm," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Lt. Rob Schoonover said.

Evans had previously jumped on the hood of the truck.

According to Schoonover, the driver sped off to exit the lot, "And in doing so, he ran over the victim...His tire basically causing injury to the head."

Evans was thrown off the hood of the truck and run over as the driver went to accelerate away.  He died four days later in the hospital.

Police said they are still trying to identify and question others who were at the scene, including a man who as striking the passenger in the pickup while Johnson was beating the driver.
"Everyone was intoxicated.

Everyone was drinking," Schoonover said.

"Alcohol played a major part in this."
