Jacksonville, FL —
Two people were hit by a train Thursday morning in Putnam County. One person is confirmed dead through the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Fire & Rescue crews were called around 7am to an area near CR 309 and U.S. 17 in Satsuma. The Florida Highway Patrol says 30-year-old Stephen Smith and 32-year-old Amanda Harvey were lying on the tracks for an unknown reason.
When the operator saw the people, he started using the horn and tells troopers he saw two people trying to get up, but they didn’t get away in time. Smith was killed and Harvey taken to Shands UF with serious injuries.
The collision happened on CSX tracks but involved an Amtrak train. An Amtrak spokesperson tells our news partner Action News this will be investigated as trespassing. That person reports it takes a train the distance of a football field in order to stop.
FHP is investigating is drugs and alcohol were factors in the crash. We’re told charges are pending further investigation.
