JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —
The search is on for JSO after a shooting Tuesday night at the Walmart on Beach Boulevard and Southside Boulevard and a man is dead this morning after he was shot in the parking lot while he sat in a car with another person.
J-S-O says it happened around 8 last night. Police say the shooter walked up to the car and then shot the passenger after a few minutes, and ran off. Police aren’t sure whether the shooter was in the car or not when he fired.
Detectives tell our news partner Action News the driver says he drove to a nearby Kangaroo station.
"So he just pulled into the first lit-up area he saw. He was already on the phone with police and he saw the Kangaroo...he alleged he was scared and he was just trying to get away," said Sgt. Jimmy Judge with JSO.
WOKV spoke with customers heading into Walmart to shop Wednesday morning. One woman says she was on her way to do some shopping here after dropping off her kids at school and heard about the shooting on the radio, but it didn't stop her from coming anyway.
"It was a little concerning but, you know, it's daylight hours...so I figured it's probably safe," she said.
The woman says she doubts others will stop going to that Walmart to shop unless they're especially cautious. Another customer says she normally comes in to the McDonald's inside the Walmart to sit and have a cup of coffee but she had to think twice before coming in this morning after hearing about the shooting.
A security guard was patrolling the parking lot from early on in the morning, but it's not clear whether that is normal or as a result of the homicide. There has been no indication yet that the shooting was caught on security camera but we did note ten camera posts with three cameras each facing different directions attached to the front of the Walmart facing the parking lot.
No word yet on any suspects. We will update the story as we learn more.
