Jacksonville, FL —
The Mathews Bridge is now open in both directions, but delays in removing the "road closed" signs confused motorists on Wednesday morning.
A key connector between downtown Jacksonville and Arlington, the bridge was closed late on Sunday evening when winds from TS Beryl damaged a temporary construction deck that is above the roadway.
The decking allows construction crews to get work done on top of the span while traffic flows beneath.
On the part of the decking that was damaged, at least one support cable had to be replaced and secondary cables were cleaned up and secured. The entire decking structure had to be inspected before allowing the bridge to be reopened.
After the bridge was deemed safe, it took a few hours for all of the "road closed" signs to be removed, causing many drivers to seek an unneccesary detour.
