Mayor hopeful about future of Gateway Mall

By Alyssa Spirato

JACKSONVILLE, Fl. —

The Mayor of Jacksonville is speaking out on the ongoing issues surrounding the Gateway Mall on the Northside.

As the mall owner, Carlton Jones faces a notice of foreclosure; Mayor Alvin Brown remains hopeful that the mall will pull through

“Hopefully with everyone working together, that location remains viable and investors come and improve it,” Brown tells WOKV.

The mall has seen its ups and downs throughout the years, but has received help for revitalization.

In the late 90s, the state legislature approved $20 million in government incentives and tax breaks to boost it back up. Five million of that was given by city.

According to the Florida Times Union, Jones reportedly owes around $580 thousand in back taxes to the city.

“When you have taxes, you pay them. Sometimes people are given time to pay them. But the key is, you have to pay your taxes on the property,” says Brown.

Jones received a notice of foreclosure earlier on last week. One of the major tenants of the mall is The Supervisor of Elections Office.
