The Memorial Service for Peter Bragan Sr. will be held at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville from 5-7 PM on Tuesday, July 10, 2012. A service will take place at 7 PM.
For the many thousands of fans that passed through the turnstiles at the Baseball Grounds are welcomed to the Baseball Grounds to show support of this great Jacksonville Icon. At 7 PM the Suns will have a service to honor Mr. Peter Bragan Sr. and a few speakers will talk about his life and what he has meant to the city of Jacksonville.
Peter David Bragan Sr., 89, passed away July 7, 2012 after heart failure. He was born July 3, 1923 in Birmingham, AL and has resided in Jacksonville for the past 28 years. He served during WWII in the 3rd Army with General Patton in France and Germany.
He grew up in Birmingham, AL where he was an automobile dealer and in 1984 he purchased the Jacksonville Suns. He has been the majority owner since and developed the team into the most successful minor league franchise in Jacksonville history. He saw his club win five championships and was instrumental in getting the new ballpark built and opened in 2003. However, he was more than just a team owner, he was one of those larger than life characters you run into only occasionally in your life.
He could make most anybody smile by just entering the room, and he had a way of making everybody he met feel like a lifelong friend. He would sing you a song at most anytime. He made three hole-in-ones as a golfer but delighted in hitting a good tee shot and then proclaiming, "kind of ladylike, but down the middle!" He could catch fish, anytime anywhere, even when nobody else could and once hit 19 straight wild quail without missing! Above all anybody could tell after being around him anytime at all, he was one tough son-of-a-gun and they don't make 'em like him anymore. He will be sorely missed by all his many fans.
Family members include his wife of 68 years, Mary Frances Bragan, son, Peter (Nancy) Bragan, Jr., daughter Bonita (Dan Hughes) Bragan. He was one of 7 brothers and 2 sisters and is survived by his brothers, Frank and Lionel and sister, Marion (John) Lewis.
Mr. Bragan will Lay in State from 5-7pm, Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Funeral service will follow at 7:05pm at home plate. Interment will be private in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, AL.
Another special remembrance will take place when the Suns return home against the Biscuits from Wednesday, July 11, 2012 - Friday, July 13, 2012.
Arrangements by Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home, 850 St. Johns Bluff Rd. N. Jacksonville.
