Mickelson hosting gala event at Sawgrass

By Andrew Greenstein

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. —

Phil Mickelson is in town hosting a gala event for "Birdies for the Brave" at TPC Sawgrass.

Mickelson and his wife founded the organization ni 2004, raising money for nine non-profit organizations that support members of the military.

"It started with Phil and (wife) Amy donating $100 per birdie (and) $500 per eagle," says Steven Kupcha, a military veteran who runs Birdies for the Brave for the PGA Tour.

The signature event will be a two-day pro-am tournament that will be played on both courses at Sawgrass.

"It's almost like a 'Birdies for the Brave' event on steroids," says Chris Reimer with the PGA Tour.  "They've just blown this thing up this year and really gone above and beyond."

The field for this year's event is full, but if you'd like to participate in the golf tournament next year, you'll have your chance.

"It's open to the public, so you can come in and you pay your entry fee," says Kupcha.

The event also includes a group baby shower in the Sunset Room at the Sawgrass clubhouse.

Operation Shower will involve 30 local military moms-to-be whose spouses are deployed members of the U.S. Navy.

Tomorrow night, the organization is holding a concert at the Times Union Center, featuring Darius Rucker (Hootie and the Blowfish) and Vince Gill.
