NE FL Representatives "hopeful" on fiscal cliff talks

By Stephanie Brown

Jacksonville, FL —

Some movement in Washington on fiscal cliff negotiations, but does that mean we are edging closer to a deal?

Your lawmakers are hopeful, but not sure.

“I’m happy that talks are going on, but I don’t know what kind of progress it is,” says Democratic Congresswoman Corrine Brown.

Brown doesn’t like the direction the deals are moving, with the President now proposing to raise the tax rate on American’s earning more than $400,000- rather than $250,000 previously proposed.

“I don’t know why we’re fighting so hard for millionaires and billionaires,” she says.

Brown will also not consider any plan that includes cuts to Social Security.

“It’ll be 434-1.  I’m not gunna vote to include seniors in this mix,” she says.

But for Republican Congressman Ander Crenshaw, all options need to be on the table.  He issued a statement saying he remains hopeful that there will be a deal, but there are significant fiscal problems to deal with.

“As discussions move forward, I am dedicated to keeping taxes low and our defense strong.  Everyone needs to come to the table and review all the options to decrease spending, reform entitlement programs, and increase revenues. And, comprehensive and pro-growth tax reform which broadens the base, lowers rates, raises revenues, and reduces the deficit should be part of that discussion,” the statement says.

Brown is also hopeful there will be a deal, mainly because she can’t imagine risking higher tax rates for everyone if one isn’t reached.
