Nelson, Rubio, Crenshaw asking for carrier to Mayport in 2016

By Matt Augustine

Jacksonville, FL —

Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson along with Congressman Ander Crenshaw have asked U.S. Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Johnathan Greenert to speed up the arrival of a nuclear aircraft carrier to Naval Station Mayport.

In a letter, the legislators say the move is "in the best national security interest of our Navy and our nation."  Right now, the carrier is set to arrive in Mayport in 2019, but the letter asks Greenert to consider moving the date to 2016.

They say a report shows the move will cost millions of dollars less than originally estimated, and would reduce the risk to the carrier fleet in the event of a terrorist attack or natural disaster.
