New poll shows shift among I-4 corridor voters and independents

By Matt Augustine

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

A new poll out from Mason Dixon shows the president trailing big time here in Florida, at least in part justifying the president's comment on having a "bad night" at the most recent debate.

"Obama got absolutely nothing out of the debate.  He didn't bring any voters into his column," says Mason Dixon pollster Brad Coker.

Coker says the election shift is happening, with the middle 35-64 demographic beginning to lean Romney, giving him control of the I-4 corridor.  He says that demographic, made up largely of baby boomers and young to middle-aged adults makes up 56 percent of Florida's electorate, so the shift is significant.

"I believe once voters fall off of Obama and go ahead and go with Romney and are comfortable to say they're for Romney, it's much harder for Obama to win their voters back," says Coker.

The president has also seen a 10 point lead in independents vanish, which also hurts his numbers in Florida.  Many have said that whichever candidate wins this election is going to have to win Florida.

"Now Romney is up by 13, so there's been a complete flip with independents."

Coker says according to the poll, the president got absolutely nothing out of the debate.  The president and Mitt Romney will debate again next Tuesday.
