Jacksonville, FL —

Police say the man killed in today’s officer-involved shooting was involved in an earlier shooting as well.

Officers first responded earlier this afternoon to multiple 911 calls about shots fired at 5020 Cleveland Road. They then located a vehicle at the intersection of 45th Street and Avenue B which matched witness descriptions of a vehicle from the scene of that shooting.

The driver and passenger both fled from officers. The driver is now in police custody. The passenger led police to a business in a converted home at 5748 Avenue B.Chief Tom Hackney says when the passenger first exited the vehicle, officers saw a gun in his waistband.

“A gun was found along the route, but the last thing officers knew the suspect was armed,” he says.

He says it was unknown at this time whether the gun was the one involved in the earlier shooting, or the one police had seen on the suspect's waist.

The suspect then crawled under the home.A K-9 unit was sent in, but the man continued to refuse the officer’s call to come out.

“The suspect not only refused to comply, the suspect shouted profanities at the officer,” Hackney says.

At this point, the officer says he saw the man reach for his waistband, where he previously had seen a gun.The officer then fired at least 3 or 4 shots, killing the suspect.

Hackney says the officer is on administrative leave pending the investigation, which is protocol.

The identity of the officer and the suspect have not been released at this time.
