A man wielding a sword in a northside neighborhood was shot and killed by Jacksonville police. The man was in the area of New Berlin and Airport Center Drive.
JSO Director of Investigations Dwayne Senterfitt says the man got onto his knees and then stood up, from inside his trench coat he pulled out a sword. Senterfitt says the sword was at least three feet long.
Police tell us they got a call before 8 a.m. from a neighbor reporting a man was outside waving a sword. When they arrived they tried to subdue the man but couldn’t and they even got help from an off-duty officer.
One of the neighbors, a 6'3, 240 lb man also helped, Senterfitt says that neighbor told him the sword wielding man was strong and got a piece of him, literally, he bit him. Police then tried to taze him but the man was not affected.
Another officer arrived at the scene and that’s when the sword wielding man somehow got inside that cruiser. He drove off and that’s when police shot at the car 12 times by two different officers. He was shot and killed.
We’re still at the scene working to get more details.
