Sgt. Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says at around 6:15 a.m., a Vilano Beach man was robbed as he was leaving his house in the 500 block of 23rd Street North for work this morning.
"The individual demanded money and forced the male subject back into his residence, at which point he began to go through the home (and) did in fact leave with an undisclosed amount of funds," says Mulligan.
The robber wasn't finished.
"During the process, (the robber) did in fact shoot the homeowner -- the victim -- in the leg. That individual has been taken to Shands Jacksonville trauma center for treatment."
The truck the robber stole has been found, but the robber is still on the loose.
"The description that we have is that this individual is just a light-skinned black male, approximately 5'10", 180 lbs. and he was seen wearing a ski mask."
SJSO helicopters have been combing the area to make sure no one else is in danger.
