Police officer arrested for stealing found items

By Matt Augustine

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

A JSO employee is now seeing the other side of law enforcement after she was busted stealing found items during what police call an integrity check.

Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt says sometimes when police get info that an employee is doing something he or she shouldn’t be, they’ll try to set that person up.  A few weeks ago an FBI agent brought Officer Cheryl Cummings a purse that he “found” in the parking lot of the Zone 4 substation on the Westside where she worked.

"Surveillance was done that afternoon and integrity detectives saw her take that bag to her car," said Senterfitt.

Police served a search warrant on Cummings's car Friday morning but did not find the purse there.  They then called Officer Cummings into the police station to be interviewed, and while they were talking to her Senterfitt says she admitted she had taken the purse home and said she did it because she wanted to figure out to whom it belonged.

Although police don't currently have hard evidence that Cummings stole any other found items or property, Senterfitt says they have gotten information leading them to suspect that she has.

"No investigations were compromised, it literally is stuff that, I guess she would think that somebody lost and if she gave it a little time and nobody claimed it, nobody was going to miss it," said Senterfitt.

JSO says this was not Cummings first brush with law enforcement.  Senterfitt says she was arrested in 2004 and charged with felony theft but that the charge was eventually dropped.

"She made contact with somebody who had a problem with their credit report and she said she could help them get their credit fixed for a fee, and I guess there are companies that do that, that work to repair your credit," said Senterfitt.  So it appears [she] served as a middle-man on that transaction.  Then there was some question about how much of that money actually went ot the company and where the rest of it went."

Cummings has worked for JSO since 1997.  She had been on a light work assignment that Senterfitt said was due to health reasons.
