Portion of I-10 where hole opened is already slated for replacement

After emergency construction which lasted through the day, the Florida Department of Transportation has reopened the left lane of I-10 Westbound near US 301.

The closure on the two-lane portion of the highway caused delays throughout the day, with the lane reopening around 6 PM. It started when the FDOT found problems with the concrete on that lane.

“Sometimes, right there at the seams, some of that concrete will start popping up,” says FDOT Spokesman Ron Tittle.

He says there was not a great immediate concern, but enough to warrant the emergency repairs.

“Structurally, it’s still sound, but it’s something that we need to fix before it becomes a bigger issue,” Tittle says.

The area is actually already slated for replacement, according to Tittle. He says the $79 million overpass replacement and interchange improvement plan will be put out for bid in September.
This is the latest in a series of problems which have plagued highways across Jacksonville over the past few weeks, including overrunning construction and other holes on major roads.
