About 60 Jacksonville firefighters responded to a two alarm fire in the St. Johns Town Center today where multiple propane tanks exploded.
Jacksonville Fire Rescue tells us they received multiple calls about an explosion at an apartment complex under construction in the Town Center, near Blackfinn. Initial reports also warned about workers in the building.
JFRD Spokesman Tom Francis says when crews arrived, workers had safely evacuated the building. No area businesses were closed, although the road immediately in front of the building- Big Island Drive- was blocked off.
At this time, Francis says they believe several propane tanks on the roof of the five story building exploded and the flooring they were laying down smoldered. He says there will be more information on the cause, as well as the extent of the damage, once the State Fire Marshal’s office completes its investigation.
While crews continued to work on containing hot spots in the building, the fire was contained within about 15 minutes of crews arriving. It's believed the fire was an accident. Damages are estimated at $80,000.
