Florida Senate Bill 672 would ban the usage of any red light cameras. The bill was passed by the Transportation Committee by a 4-2 vote this week.
One group supporting the bill is the Libertarian Party of Florida. Vice Chair Charles Braden says the cameras are unconstitutional. He says the cameras don't presume innocence.
Braden says the cameras aren't effective in that people are still going to run through red lights and if a driver knows they're coming up to an intersection with a camera their driving becomes erratic. He says drivers who do end up getting tickets, rarely know why they're getting fined.
The safety implications to the lights has been disputed, some say it makes intersections safer, others like Braden argue accidents are now going from the intersections to the approaches of an intersection. One thing the cameras are doing is generating revenue for law enforcement.
