Proposed mosque runs into opposition

By Andrew M. Greenstein

Jacksonville, FL —

We're hearing some strong opposition to plans to build a mosque on the Southside.

Many people who live in the area voiced their concerns last night at the Regency Library.

Some say they're concerned about the traffic on Anniston Road, since it would be the fourth house of worship in a 3-block area.

One priest, however, has a different point of view -- he thinks opposition to the mosque's is fueled by prejudice against Islam.

The potential builder says he's willing to hire an off-duty officer to control traffic and would refrain from putting up a loud speaker during services.

Residents, however, say that's not enough.
