A suspicious package forces a partial evacuation of the Putnam County Courthouse today.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that an envelope containing a white powdery substance was located on the lower level of the courthouse,” says Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Paula Priester.
The lower level of the courthouse was evacuated around 1 PM and nobody was allowed in to the building. The second and third floor of the courthouse remained open initially, although Priester says they did close the entire building early while different agencies were investigating.
She says a field test leads them to believe the substance is not an active biological agent, but rather chemical. She wouldn’t comment further on what it could be, except to say they are not concerned about whether the substance was breathed in by any passers-by. The powder is undergoing testing at the Department of Health lab in Jacksonville currently.
She expects the courthouse will open for normal business tomorrow morning. Nobody was injured during the evacuation.
