Jacksonville, FL —
Former Jacksonville Mayor Ed Austin has died. Austin served the city as mayor from 1991-1995.
He also served as state attorney for about 20 years.
He's credited with playing a key role in bringing the Jaguars to Jacksonville. Austin also played a key role in the River City Renaissance project.
Audrey Moran, who worked under Austin in the State Attorney's Office starting in 1986, tells our news partner Channel 4 that Austin died in his sleep at his home.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
If you have a comment or memory of Ed Austin, we encourage you to leave it below.
Mayor John Peyton issued the following statement:
“Mayor Austin was a true statesman and the epitome of a public servant. In fact, I do not know of a man of greater character who has ever led our city.
Whether it was working to keep harmful criminals off the streets or executing a vision for redevelopment of downtown, Mayor Austin’s life was dedicated to serving this community and its citizens. His efforts, both while serving in office and in the years that followed, have helped to shape Jacksonville and make it a better place.
Personally, I am forever grateful to Mayor Austin for his friendship. During my time in office, he has provided me with counsel and support, as he has done for countless others in our community.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
Mayoral candidate Alvin Brown issued the following statement:
"Ed Austin was Jacksonville’s ultimate statesman. Through his service as Public Defender, General Counsel, State Attorney and Mayor, Ed Austin set the highest possible standard of devotion to our community. But Mayor Austin was more than just a leader. He was a caring mentor and teacher who inspired countless people to devote their lives to public service. His loss is devastating, but Ed Austin’s impact on Jacksonville will be felt for many years to come – especially if future generations of public servants take their lead from his example. Santhea and I offer our deepest sympathy to Mayor Austin’s family.”
