Rep. Yoho: Law is on GOP side in DHS, immigration debate

Northeast Florida Republican Congressman Ted Yoho believes the law is on the Republicans’ side in the partisan debate over funding the Department of Homeland Security.

"They don't have a leg to stand on," Yoho says of Senate Democrats, who used the filibuster for the fourth time on Monday night to pass the $40 billion Homeland Security measure.

The Department is at risk of shutting down at the end of the week, forcing about 30,000 of its 230,000 employees to be furloughed.  The rest would be expected to continue working without receiving their biweekly paychecks because they’re deemed “essential” employees.

The Senate is debating a House-approved bill that would reverse President Obama’s executive actions on immigration reform.  Last week, a federal judge in Texas blocked the actions, which would clear the way for millions of illegal immigrants to obtain work permits.

“The only thing in question is the very essence of what the President is trying to do unconstitutionally,” Yoho says.  “And we have got the law on our side at this point in time.”

Yoho believes Senate Democrats should pass the bill and debate Republicans on immigration later.  He thinks if Democrats block the bill and Homeland Security shuts down, Republicans will get the blame.

“You know the media is going to be complicit, and they’re gonna back the President,” he says.

But Yoho believes the President and Democrats are the ones who are “playing politics with our national security.”

Northeast Florida Democratic Congresswoman Corrine Brown voted against the Homeland Security funding bill (H.R. 240) back on Jan. 14 when the overall House passed it.

WOKV News repeatedly reached out for comment from Brown’s office for this article but has not yet heard back.  Check back to WOKV.com for more updates on this developing story.
